Perhaps you’ve seen them or even have some yourself. They’re happy, highly sensitive, sometimes temperamental, and can even be seen as ‘difficult’ or ‘misunderstood’. When you look into their eyes, you know that they are something special – wise old souls in small bodies. Many of whom when they speak, speak a ‘different’ language, saying profound and wise things. These are the children being born today on this planet – children that are born pure in Spirit, and who are truly a new ‘breed’ unlike anything you’ve seen in previous generations. These children are The Indigo Children or Indigos.

By now, Indigo, The Movie! has made its debut, introducing the world to presence of Indigos among us. If you haven’t seen it, simply put, this movie is about a seemingly “normal” child, with strikingly different characteristics in personality and behaviour.

But what is an Indigo really? Well, in 1982, the term Indigo was coined by parapsychologist, Nancy Tappe, who, in her book Understanding Your Life through Color linked personality differences - behaviour and character style, with the colour of people’s auras. The Indigos are the ‘new’ kind of child – dark blue auras with very distinctive personalities.

So how do we identify the Indigos? As a parent, teacher, or caregiver, your first inkling is the sense of a child being ‘different’ but not necessarily being able to pinpoint what that could be. There are numerous characteristics of Indigos, however, many exhibit the common behaviours of: being bored in school, rebelling against societal structures, are very intolerant of situations that don’t allow for free choice or will, they feel as if they don’t belong here and sometimes life is often painful. They can be misdiagnosed as ADD, ADHD, Autism, or are labelled as 'misunderstood', 'difficult', and/or 'unable to fit in or get along'. Often, they have ‘hot’ temperaments and a warrior-like ferocity when fighting for a cause especially when wanting to be heard and understood. Physically, Indigo children can have strong aversions to specific foods such as wheat, dairy, gluten, sugar, dyes and even chemicals and synthetic materials. Conversely, Indigos are bright and inquisitive, and highly intelligent – they always ask thoughtful, insightful questions, and question everything. Many of these children are very intuitive and exhibit psychic ability – they just seem to ‘know things’. They also have a great empathy for animals, nature, and rocks and are very artistic or gifted in several areas. They are also capable of tuning or honing in other people’s emotions – nothing slips by them.

As with all children, the Indigos come as complete perfection, into a seemingly imperfect world. But there is great disparity between the energy of their Higher wisdom within them and the energy of this world. It is the disparity therefore, that causes these children often feel confused, rebel, act out their pain, and some older or Adult Indigos often feel suicidal or suffer from depression. They feel discomfort being in their bodies, and many have difficulty coping with life. And spiritually, they often feel battered and bruised. The difficulty lies not only in these children not having a full conscious understanding of how to fit in a world that does not necessarily support them at this time in its evolution, but also for parents, guardians, teachers, and friends, on how to counsel and guide them through these 'rough' waters.

It is equally important to know though, that these children come into this world by choice. They fully know that they have an inner agenda – by demonstrating their ‘differences’ through their speech, thinking and behaviour, they assist us in breaking old paradigms of perception, behaviour and overall ways of being. In other words, the Indigos are the new generation of superheroes that help expand the concsiousness and evolution of this world.

In the next issue I will speak more about the strategies and solutions for working with Indigos – helping them to cope and navigate their way around a changing and fluctuating world.
